PLAINVIEW — 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University’s Abraham Art Gallery welcomes Plains Art Association for the 63rd annual Juried Spring Celebration of Art, which opened May 19, and continues through June 29. The show is made possible by PAA members, donations from businesses and individuals, and an annual grant from Plainview Cultural Arts Council, Inc.
Lubbock artist John Chinn served as the juror this year. Born in Galveston in 1951, Chinn earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Texas Tech University and then began working nomadically across Texas, painting houses, doing construction, and creating art in his spare time. He settled back in Lubbock in the ’90s to focus on developing his style as an artist. He married illustrator Angela Adams, who encouraged his art, and he began showing in competitions and exhibitions. Chinn was hired by Tech’s College of Architecture to teach drawing and painting, which he taught for 18 years before retiring in 2017 to make a full-time commitment to his own art. Mainly working in acrylic, Chinn’s subject matter ranges from landscapes, portraits and still-life to architecture and murals.
Art forms eligible for submission to be judged include oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and graphic illustrations, photography, and other forms such as mosaics, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media and fiber art. Selected winners are displayed at the Abraham Malouf Art Gallery, which is located on the atrium level of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Learning Resources Center on 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s Plainview campus. Many of these pieces are available to purchase.
Purchase awards and monetary prizes are contributed by individuals and businesses from the community and will be given Sunday, June 29, the closing day of the show, during a reception and awards presentation. The reception and awards presentation take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the gallery. All works, including purchase awards, must be retrieved at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.
