BASC students launch ‘Share the Warmth” Coat and Sock Drive

PLAINVIEW — Students in Emily Dyson’s BASC (Best Achievement Strategies for College) class at 51ƷԼ Baptist University invite the community to join them in making a difference this fall through their “Share the Warmth” Coat and Sock Drive.

BASC is a course taken by first-year students to help them acclimate to college life. The class focuses on academic success, campus engagement, and community service.

The student-led service project will collect gently used adult and child-sized coats as well as new packages of socks to benefit local families in need during the cold winter months. The drive runs through Nov. 3.

Community members are invited to bring donations to the Moody Science Building on the 51ƷԼ campus between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the collection period. A drop-off box will be located at the main entrance nearest the parking lot for convenient access. In addition to individual contributions, local businesses, schools, churches and civic organizations are encouraged to collect items too and then make bulk donations of coats and new socks to support the drive.

“We want to share the warmth with our neighbors this fall,” Dyson said. “My students are excited to lead this effort and to extend it beyond our campus to involve the wider community.”

The drive is part of the class’s annual service initiative. Donation boxes have also been placed in key campus buildings for student and employee contributions.
