WBU announces digital, financial literacy initiative for rural students

PLAINVIEW, TX — 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University is launching a new digital and financial literacy initiative aimed at expanding educational and workforce opportunities for students in rural communities through collaboration with the NASDAQ Market Lab.

The initiative, titled Empowering Students with Digital and Financial Skills for Workforce and Community Advancement, will be introduced during a public event at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Nunn Business Building on 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s Plainview campus. The presentation begins at 5:30 p.m., following a brief reception.

Led by the University’s School of Business, the initiative is designed to provide students with exposure to industry-relevant technologies and foundational financial concepts that are increasingly essential in today’s economy. Through the NASDAQ Market Lab platform, students will engage with advanced market simulation tools that allow for hands-on learning related to financial markets and economic decision-making.

University leaders say the initiative reflects a broader effort to address educational and economic gaps that often affect rural communities by strengthening digital fluency and financial understanding among students.

“The goal is to better prepare students for participation in a rapidly evolving workforce while also supporting long-term community advancement,” said Dr. Bashir Easter, associate dean and assistant professor of business administration. “This initiative creates opportunities for experiential learning that connect classroom instruction with real-world application.”

The Jan. 29 event offers community members, educators and business leaders an opportunity to learn more about the initiative, meet faculty involved in the project and explore potential partnerships moving forward.

The initiative is in its early stages, and university officials emphasize that the launch event is intended to introduce the concept, outline its educational goals, and invite collaboration as the project develops. The university eagerly anticipates moving forward with the initiative as funding becomes available.
