LangFest / Festival Hispano de Cultura y Lengua set for Thursday

51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University welcomes approximately 240 area high school students to its Plainview campus Thursday, Feb. 12, for LangFest / Festival Hispano de Cultura y Lengua, a daylong celebration of Hispanic language, culture, and academic achievement hosted by the School of Humanities and Leadership.

The event begins with registration from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Harral Auditorium Complex, followed by a welcome session at 9:30 a.m. in Harral Auditorium. Cultural artwork submitted by participating students will be displayed throughout the day in the hallways surrounding Harral Auditorium.

“51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ is honored to welcome these outstanding students to campus,” said 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ President Dr. Donna Hedgepath. “Events like LangFest highlight the importance of language, culture, and academic excellence, and we are pleased to host these talented students from across the region.”

Among high schools registered to take part in the festivities and competitions are Abernathy, Anton, Canyon, Dimmitt, Floydada, Friona, Hale Center, Kress, Lubbock Christiaan, Palo Duro, and Spur.

Morning academic competitions from 10 a.m. to noon include extemporaneous speaking and several Spanish poetry categories — beginner, intermediate, advanced, and original works — held in Harral Auditorium and the Heritage Room on the second floor of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Learning Resources Center.

“LangFest gives students an opportunity to showcase their language skills while celebrating Hispanic culture,” said Dr. Karen Strovas, Dean of the School of Humanities and Leadership.

Lunch in the Laney Center is followed by campus tours from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. A Talent Show begins at 1:45 p.m. in Harral Auditorium. The day concludes with an awards ceremony from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
