Dr. Dyson: A Man of Simplicity, Science, and Taste

Dr. Dyson embodies the energy and enthusiasm of a true professor. He teaches biology and chemistry in the Kenneth L. Mattox School of Mathematics and Sciences and is always happy to talk with students and faculty alike. Both in and out of the classroom, his passion for his work and his students is clear. But many may not know his story or what he enjoys outside of teaching.

What Are Dr. Dyson’s Interests?

Dr. Dyson is a simple man with impeccable taste. “My favorite color is gray because it goes with everything, and it looks pretty in the clouds,” he said. He lives by the belief that simplicity doesn’t make something lesser.

He also loves coffee. When asked about his favorite food, he said he enjoys almost anything, but coffee holds a special place. If you bring him a cup for an 8 a.m. class, it’s sure to bring a big smile to his face.

Another simple pleasure he enjoys is walking. His favorite hobby is strolling through parks and trails, taking time to appreciate nature and move at a slower pace. He’s also a fan of video games and often talks with his students about some of his favorite classics.

Like many professors, Dr. Dyson also enjoys reading. Choosing a favorite book was a challenge, but he landed on The Lord of the Rings trilogy for fiction and Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green as one of his favorite academic reads. His love of Tolkien also extends to film. His favorite movie is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He’s also fond of The Shawshank Redemption and The Chosen, the latter being a favorite because of how deeply it impacts people’s faith.

The opportunity was right to teach what I love. I got to work with people I wanted to work with. I get to work with friends.”

He also appreciates 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s smaller class sizes, which allow him to connect more personally with his students. “Talk to your professors and don’t feel bad for talking to them,” he advises. “Also, take math classes early.”
