Unlike 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s other academic schools, the Ben and Bertha Mieth School of Nursing is located on the San Antonio campus. Though it sits hundreds of miles from Plainview, it remains an important and vibrant part of the 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ community. Many exciting things take place within the program, and Dr. Grigsby, dean of the School of Nursing, has shared insight into what makes the San Antonio campus and its nursing programs stand out.
The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSN). The BSN program includes three tracks: Generic BSN, LVN-BSN, and RN-BSN, with the RN-BSN option offered completely online. The MSN program is also fully online and focuses on preparing students for careers in nursing education.
These degree options give students flexibility and multiple pathways based on their background and professional goals. While academics are central to the program, faculty support and learning environments are equally important components of the nursing experience.
According to Dr. Grigsby, the School of Nursing places a strong emphasis on preparing students for the realities of modern healthcare. “We have great faculty who are invested in preparing students to be nurses in a very complex healthcare environment,” she said. “Our faculty are not just great educators, but leaders in the profession of nursing as well.”
Students benefit from learning alongside faculty members who bring real-world experience into the classroom. Dr. Grigsby also highlighted the individualized support available through the program. “We offer one-on-one support and coaching with a Student Achievement Coach,” she explained. “There are many opportunities for students to step into leadership roles.”
This combination of academic rigor and personal support helps students grow both professionally and personally as they prepare for their future careers.
One of the biggest reasons students choose the School of Nursing, according to Dr. Grigsby, is the emphasis on hands-on experience. Students have opportunities to engage in real-world learning before graduation, helping them build confidence and practical skills.
The program also offers unique opportunities beyond the classroom, including a mission trip to Honduras where students help provide medical care to local communities. In addition, the School of Nursing utilizes virtual reality simulation training, allowing students to experience a wide range of clinical scenarios in a safe, controlled environment.
With experiential learning, mission opportunities, dedicated faculty, and advanced simulation technology, the Ben and Bertha Mieth School of Nursing continues to prepare students for meaningful careers in an ever-changing healthcare field.
