From Broadcast to Blackboard: Professor Rush's Story

Professor Rush Outside the Classroom

Professor Rush joined 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s School of Creative Arts toward the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since played a key role in rebuilding the media and communications program. Known for both his professional experience and approachable personality, he has quickly become a familiar face on campus. This article takes a closer look at the man students know from the classroom.

Hobbies and Interests

It comes as no surprise to anyone who has met Professor Rush that his favorite animal is dogs. He owns a very sweet dog who often roams the office looking for people to greet. He shared that he enjoys eating lunch with students, and they often stop by to spend time with his dog as well.

When asked what he enjoys eating, Professor Rush said he prefers anything with chicken in it; he loves chicken in all its forms.

As a media professor, it’s only fitting that his favorite books and movies reflect strong storytelling. His favorite book series is The Lord of the Rings, and he is fascinated with everything Tolkien. His favorite movie, however, may surprise some students: Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Beyond media, Professor Rush enjoys fishing, photography, and simply talking with people. He is known for being personable and always willing to engage in conversation about shared interests.

Professor Rush Before 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ

Before teaching at 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ, Professor Rush was once a student here himself. During his time as a student, he considered careers in the military or the forest service. However, after taking a media class, everything changed. That single course sparked a passion that led to a 40-year career in media and broadcast journalism.

After years of professional work, he eventually retired but found his way back to 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ, this time as a professor. His journey has come full circle, allowing him to invest in students who may be discovering their own passions just as he once did.

Advice from Professor Rush

Having once been a student at 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ, Professor Rush understands both the challenges and the growth that come with college life. His advice to students is simple but meaningful:

“Be open-minded in college. College will mold you. Try new things to find out where you fit and where your passion is. Accept that you don’t know it all and be willing to learn.”

Whether offering advice, sharing stories from his career, or welcoming students into his office, Professor Rush remains committed to helping students discover their passions and grow both personally and professionally.
