GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Mental Health Counselor, under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, is responsible for providing direct counseling services to students. This role supports the overall mission of 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University by promoting emotional well-being, personal growth, and mental health within the campus community. The counselor will assist in implementing high-quality, Christ-centered mental health services that align with the Student Development Goals of the Student Services area. 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist Student Services is committed to developing student leaders who are Christ-like, Capable, and Committed.
SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES AS RELATED TO COUNSELING SERVICES:
- Provide professional counseling services to students.
- Make appropriate counseling referrals.
- Respond to crisis situations by participating in on call weekend and evening crisis response.
- Plan and develop outreach programs to the university community: develop and lead workshops, seminars, or presentations on topics like stress management, healthy relationships, grief, or spiritual wellness.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with administrative and academic departments: collaborate with student life and academic departments on wellness initiatives and consult with faculty, staff, and residence life personnel regarding student concerns and mental health best practices.
- Participate in or chair university committees as needed or appointed.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care team or case reviews, respecting confidentiality.
- Assist with data collection and reporting for program evaluation and improvement.
- Support compliance with legal, ethical, and university-specific policies and procedures.
- Provide supervision for the universities Master of Arts degree in Counseling Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Master’s degree.
- State recognized counseling license is preferred.
Experience and Knowledge:
- One (1) year of supervised counseling experience, which can include a practicum or internship.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the counseling process.
- Experience working in higher education is preferred.
- Experience working directly with university age students is preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Must be familiar with the Life Developmental stage of university students (e.g., needs, social concerns and issues that impact them).
- Must be able to communicate professionally accepted standards of practice in regard to counseling techniques utilized (nothing unconventional of experimental).
- Must be able to keep information gleaned from counseling in strict confidence.
- Must be flexible, patient, and skilled in listening and reflective responses.
- Must demonstrate an awareness of 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University’s mission while providing support that is clinically informed, inclusive, and ethically grounded.
Work Environment: The work environment for this position is a standard office setting. Employees will work primarily at a desk or workstation, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. The office maintains a controlled temperature. Noise levels are generally moderate, with typical office sounds such as conversations and office machinery.
Hours of Work: Plainview campus - Although full-time, nonexempt Plainview employees are normally scheduled to work 37.75 hours per week, the official work week for full-time salaried employees is forty (40) hours. Normal workdays on all campuses are Monday through Friday.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently stand and walk;
- Frequently flex upper trunk forward while sitting or standing;
- Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds;
- Frequently carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally carry up to 25 pounds;
- Occasionally pull or push objects;
- Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
- Frequently reach at or below shoulder height, and occasionally reach above shoulder height.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employee must be able and willing to travel and provide recruitment assistance to external campuses. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
