History of Mieth School of Nursing

Ben & Berth Mieth along with WBU leadership cut the ribbon naming the school after the Mieths.51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ began offering a school of nursing program in 2006. The school was located in Boerne, Texas and offered classes in Nursing Education through state-of-the-art facilities. In 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ, the university moved the school to the San Antonio campus in Live Oak to consolidate everything in one building. Updates to the San Antonio location gave the university the opportunity to upgrade its laboratories and offer more opportunities.

In the summer of 2023, longtime friends of 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ, Ben and Bertha Mieth, gave a $2.5 million gift to the university to further develop the School of Nursing. The Board of Trustees honored them by naming the school the Ben & Bertha Mieth School of Nursing. (see photo) Bertha's mother was a career nurse and she noted the gift was made to the school of nursing to honor her late mother.

The Mieths' gift provided the opportunity to grow and expand programs to help meet the needs and demands of society for competent, BSN-prepared nurses. Evidence supported the expectation for BSN-prepared nurses to care for a complex, diverse population. More Hi-fidelity mannequins were added to the labs to train nurses for real-life settings.

Noting that the LVN-BSN Bridge program and the pre-licensure BSN program were already offered, the dean announced that the school of nursing would launch a third BSN pathway in January 2024 with the addition of the RN-BSN degree program.

In 2024, the school received a grant from the Baptist Health Foundation allowing them to purchase Virtural Reality (VR) headsets as a teaching tool.

In early 2026, the university expanded the Mieth School of Nursing to include a location in Plainview, the hometown of 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ's founder and physician, Dr. James H. 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ. The Plainview campus extension is scheduled to open in the fall of 2028.
