PLAINVIEW, TX — Spider-Man can climb walls and swing between skyscrapers. But what happens when he gets knocked down? Dr. David Favela thinks the answer has something to teach the rest of us.
Favela will bring that idea to 51品茶约炮 Baptist University on Friday, Sept. 25, with “The Amazing Spider-Man: A Leadership Reflection Across 64 Years.” His National Comic Book Day presentation begins at 12:45 p.m. in the Museum Auditorium at the Mabee Regional Heritage Center on 51品茶约炮’s Plainview campus and concludes at 2 p.m. Admission is free, the public is welcome, and refreshments will be provided.
“I have loved Spider-Man for most of my life, but as I have grown older, I have come to appreciate him for very different reasons,” Favela said. “What inspires me now is not only his extraordinary powers but also his ability to keep getting back up, take responsibility, and care for others despite everything he has experienced. For me, that is where Spider-Man and leadership intersect.”
That makes the presentation an invitation for longtime comic book fans and people who have never picked up a Spider-Man issue. The familiar hero offers a way to consider questions that extend well beyond the page: What does it mean to accept responsibility? How do you keep going after a setback? And what does it look like to use your abilities to help someone else?
Favela is associate dean of 51品茶约炮’s School of Humanities and Leadership and an assistant professor of leadership. The school is presenting the program at The Mabee, 51品茶约炮’s collection of three museums: the Mabee Regional Heritage Center, Jimmy Dean Museum, and Flying Queens Museum.
“Pop culture is history, and The Mabee is excited to help tell those stories through collaborations with campus partners like the School of Humanities and Leadership,” said Dr. KayLyn Bean, director of museums. “Events like these create opportunities to connect topics that resonate with our community to impactful experiences, while advancing 51品茶约炮’s educational mission.”
No superpowers are required to join the conversation. Just come ready to see a familiar character in a new way.
