Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Sciences

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  A full-time faculty member, the Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sports Science (EXSS) is primarily responsible for teaching undergraduate and, potentially, graduate-level courses in exercise and sport science, physical education pedagogy, and sports management. These courses support degree pathways that may lead to professional certification, including athletic director certification. Teaching responsibilities include both face-to-face and online modalities. The faculty member will contribute to curriculum development, student advising, and support the integration of academic programs with athletic and professional leadership preparation.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  1. Be committed to student success.
  2. Prepare and teach (24) semester hours of courses each academic year.
  3. Maintain a minimum of 10 hours of office hours/week; be available for students outside of class and/or office hours.
  4. Academically advise undergraduate students and assist with registration and recruiting events.
  5. Assist the Dean and faculty members in developing new programs/curriculum, reporting data,    selecting course materials, and developing syllabi.
  6. Attend meetings and serve on assigned University, Faculty, and School Committees; participate in graduations and attend scheduled faculty and staff meetings.
  7. Provide substantial opportunities for student involvement in field-study experiences within the    context of appropriate classes.
  8. Assist with the coordination and development of programs where applicable.
  9. Adhere to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) mandates and guidelines where applicable.
  10. Coordinate EXSS course and teaching schedules for EXSS faculty and coaches who also teach full-time.
  11. Serve as liaison between Athletics and Dean of Education, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Beliefs:

A commitment to and an agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas/Texas Baptists in general and 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ Baptist University in particular.

Education:

Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in Exercise and Sports Science or closely related field required. ABD applicants finalizing the dissertation, or those with a Master’s degree and extensive experience, may also be considered.

Experience and Knowledge:

  1. Previous K-12 or university teaching experience is desirable.
  2. Background experience/licensure as Physical Therapist and/or Athletic Trainer is desirable.
  3. Background experience in Sports Management is desirable.
  4. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with in online course development    and/or teaching.
  5. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in advising students and following degree plans.

 Skills and Abilities:

  1. Fluency in the English language with excellent writing and speaking skills.
  2. The ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with limited direct supervision.
  3. Proficiency with computers, technology, and related educational/classroom equipment.
  4. Willingness to integrate digital teaching and learning into courses.
  5. Athletic Director experience at the K-12 and/or college level is desired.
  6. A strong interest in teaching and leading in the growth and development of undergraduate and graduate students.
  7. The ability and desire to balance the activities inherent with a full-time academic workload such as teaching, scholarly study, professional development, student advising and counseling, course and curriculum development, public service, assistance in the administration of the academic program, and related duties and activities.
  8. The ability and desire to apply Christian principles in the workplace.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand and walk;
  • Frequently flex upper trunk forward while sitting or standing;
  • Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds;
  • Frequently carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally carry up to 25 pounds;
  • Occasionally pull or push objects;
  • Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
  • Frequently reach at or below shoulder height, and occasionally reach above shoulder height.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. Employee must be able and willing to travel and teach at external campuses. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
