Categories of Competition and Performance Opportunities
Students will recite a published (non-original) poem in Spanish in front of the group. Selections should be 3-7 minutes in length, memorized, and presented according to the student’s proficiency level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced).
Students may present an original poem, short fiction, or dramatic dialogue in Spanish. Performances should be memorized, 3-7 minutes long, and free from vulgar language or inappropriate topics. Students in this category are encouraged to provide a copy of their original work for publication with 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s Sparks Online Student Magazine.
Students will complete one assigned speaking task demonstrating their ability to speak in Spanish without rehearsal. Directions will be given in English, and responses must be given in Spanish. Prompts may include something like describing a picture, discussing a good friend, or making travel arrangements. Students will be evaluated on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and effectiveness. Speaking time will be 3-5 minutes.
Students may submit a written essay, poem, or personal narrative written entirely in Spanish. Submissions must be turned in one week before the competition (February 5). Works may be up to six pages and will be judged on grammar, vocabulary, organization, style, and overall effectiveness. Students in this category are providing permission for their work to be included in the 51Æ·²èÔ¼ÅÚ’s Sparks Online Student Magazine.
Students may perform in one of two categories: Singing/Music/Dance or Skit/Dramatic Performance. Acts should be no longer than five minutes and may include up to five participants. Music must be provided on a thumb drive for the tech person in advance. The Wi-Fi can be slow, and it has caused problems in the past.
Students may submit artwork that reflects Hispanic culture, language, literature, or history. Each student may enter up to two pieces per category, but each work can only be submitted in one category. Entries will be judged on originality, design, composition, and quality.
